I'm a second-year PhD Music student at the University of Liverpool.
My current research is an examination of paramusical sound (sound that occurs alongside music) in recordings of music, which can include:
* non-musical sounds of instruments (i.e. mechanisms, moving parts)
* sounds of performer (i.e. movement, vocalisation)
* sounds of recording/playback technology (i.e. tape/vinyl noise)
* sounds of electronics/amplification (i.e. electrical noise, mains hum)
* reflected sound (i.e. reverberation, echo)
This research investigates what these sounds connote when they occur alongside music in recordings, and how/why these connotations have developed.
Please reach out if you'd like to discuss these areas!
